Ihsan Educational center

About the School
The goals of Ihsan are: building good character, cultivating respect and living Islam through daily life. Academically, the school focuses on Qur'an Tahfidh, a solid grounding in Islamic knowledge and manners, intensive Arabic language studies, and a traditional, liberal English curriculum. The goal of our teachers is to provide students with an enjoyable and motivational learning experience. In recognition of each child's individuality and developmental speed, there are no age/grade level trappings; students work according to their personal level and pace. The classes are multi-level and small in size, allowing for high individual attention. A 'hands-on' approach to learning will be used whenever possible. Students at Ihsan are not assigned homework, aside from occasional weekend assignments and projects. Properly motivated students will spend their personal free time in self-learning, which is the most beneficial type. As well, due to the daily intensive Qur'an memorization, students should allot some time each evening for recitation/review.

School Policies

  1. No T.V.
Ihsan has a strict no television policy. It is futile to build the students at school only to break them down again at home. Students MUST abstain totally from regular television viewing, and totally from inappropriate programs/cartoons. Occasional viewing of educational or child-appropriate entertainment may be used.
  2. No Video Gaming
Students must abstain totally from video games containing violence. If child-appropriate games are used, parents MUST limit the time to a minimum and ensure that usage is not a regular/daily habit.

Arabic and Islamic Studies Program:

One of the programs at the CID is offering of Arabic Language courses and Islamic education on a spectrum that accommodates people of all levels: from building foundation in Arabic for total beginners, to building a high level of independence in acquiring Islamic sciences from their original Arabic texts.

Although open to all, the program aims at maximizing Muslims' capacity by providing means of getting a comprehensive understanding of Islam and sources of Islamic knowledge, through series of courses. These courses are offered on a long term and short term basis, based on span of interest of the student.

The methodology followed is a combination of modern approaches adopted in Islamic Universities and institutes around the world, and the traditional receptive method practiced by our great scholars of the past. It is rooted in introducing students to source books of Islamic education as much as possible, in order to encourage self reliance in learning.

It is our sincere hope that through a program like this, we can make the Arabic Language handy to all those interested, especially Muslims who want to gain a better understanding of the Qur'an, Hadith and Islamic sciences.

Target participants:
This program is geared to all those interested and ready to commit the time needed for completion of the course(s) they or the program coordinators identify as need. Once a course is started, it must be completed in order to gain the required results from it.

Courses Description:
With the diverse levels of learners in our North American communities, the Arabic and Islamic Program aim at accommodating all applicants insofar as space is available to do so. Teaching is therefore at the following levels:

Level I / Beginner
This level is basically intended for people with no knowledge of Arabic or reading skills. It is a 35 to 40 hour course that will teach learners skills of reading and writing.

At the end of the beginner's level, learners are able to read and write words and sentences in the Arabic Language without much difficulty. They are able to differentiate modes of writing, Qur'an recitation and basic phonetic rules.

Level II/ Intermediate
To be admitted to this level a learner must be able to read with some ease. Learners build on their previous knowledge to improve reading skills. Prescribed books and a selection of texts are used for teaching sentence patterns in the language. Through multiple drills, learners are able to recognize the rules of working with verbs and other parts of speech. Also at this stage, tenses are introduced, conjugation is learned and learners start developing their skills for constructing sentences independently.

Level III
A more comprehensive approach to the language is taken at this level, such as context study, syntax and sentence analysis. Students will also learn patterns of conjugation of nouns and verbs.

A wide range of texts from different sources in Arabic, including the the Qur'an Hadith, are given as examples for observing grammatical and rhetorical and other rules implemented. Learners will be introduced to source books and encouraged to use them when needed for reference.

Level IV
The main goal at this level is to build the capacity of the learner to do own independent research and analysis, and to break the barriers between students and source books. Focus is put on increasing the knowledge of the learner in Arabic and Islamic sciences.

The studies involve polishing of students' grammar, analytical study of texts, direct sourcing from books and independent study. Books on Qur'an Exegesis, Islamic Character Building, Creed and Jurisprudence are used and discussed interactively. Short independent study and presentation on Islamic concepts, biographies and books are integrated in the learning.

With such approach, we hope to produce people who are knowledgeable in the Arabic Language, capable of drawing knowledge independently from Islamic source books and having profound Islamic knowledge and character.
